Understanding Button Types
Button tufting is a classic upholstery technique that enhances furniture with a sophisticated and tailored look. Whether you're working with cloth, vinyl, or leather, choosing the right button is crucial for durability and aesthetics. At Albright’s Supply, we offer a variety of buttons designed to meet different upholstery needs.
Wire Eye Buttons are ideal for producing cloth or vinyl-covered buttons. Featuring a rust-resistant shell, these buttons help minimize rusting problems that could damage upholstery over time. Wire Eye Buttons come in a #9 size and have a loop-style backing. The heavy eye loop is engineered to withstand an 80-pound pullout test, ensuring strong and secure tufting.
Prong Buttons provide a fast, economical, and secure tufting experience. These buttons simplify the tufting process by eliminating many of the steps involved in twine tufting, making them a great choice for efficiency. No special tools or skills are required. Instead, the prongs are anchored firmly in place by bending the flat-wire legs over a prong washer at the back of the padding, securing the button in place.
Nail Buttons, also known as No Dent Assembled Nails, are specifically designed for applications where buttons need to be driven directly into wood frames. These buttons pass through fabric and foam before embedding into the frame, ensuring a sturdy hold. The small corrugations along the nail allow for easier driving while preventing the button from being easily pulled out, making them an excellent choice for long-lasting durability.
Button Sizing – The Ligne System
Buttons are measured using the Button Ligne system, a method that dates back to the 13th century. "Ligne" is the French word for “line,” and each ligne measures approximately 0.635mm. At Albright’s Supply, we offer a range of button sizes from 22L to 45L, which translates to approximately 9/16” to 1 1/8” in diameter.
