Welt Cord Explained

Welt, also known as piping, is used to join two pieces of material together, adding a decorative and functional finish to the seams on seat covers, pillows, cushions, and more. With a variety of options available, choosing the right type of welt can make a big difference in the appearance and durability of your project. Today, we’ll explore different types of welt cords and premade welts to help you find the perfect match for your upholstery needs.

Types of Welt Cord or Filler

Poly Welt

Polyethylene Welt, or Poly Welt, is a popular option for outdoor and marine applications due to its water-resistant properties. It is firm but flexible, making it ideal for projects that involve curves or corners, like patio furniture or boat seats. Poly Welt comes in three different sizes, offering versatility for a range of design aesthetics. You can easily customize it by sewing your choice of fabric or vinyl over the cord, creating a unique and durable finish for your outdoor projects.

PVC Welt
Made from PVC, this welt is durable and weather-resistant, making it a great option for projects exposed to the elements, like outdoor cushions or boat seating. It also features a hollow core, which adds flexibility without sacrificing strength. (The 3/32” size features a solid core due to it’s small diameter.)

Tissue Welt
Tissue Welt, a braided fiber welt, is commonly used in indoor furniture applications, such as couches, ottomans, and pillows. It is softer than Poly Welt, providing a more comfortable feel while maintaining durability. Tissue Welt is available in multiple sizes, and it also comes in a double-welt option, often used to conceal staples or raw fabric edges where upholstery meets a frame. Its versatility makes it a go-to choice for adding a refined finish to indoor furniture.

Premade Welts for Specific Applications

Marine Welt

Marine Welt is designed for outdoor and marine use, combining a 5/32” poly welt core with marine-grade vinyl for added durability. It is commonly used in boat seating and other outdoor projects that require a seamless and polished finish. This welt is specifically built to withstand moisture and harsh environmental conditions, making it a reliable choice for marine applications.

Embossed Welt
Embossed Welt is frequently used in automotive upholstery projects, particularly seat covers. The most common size is the 180 bead, and unlike traditional welts, Embossed Welt doesn’t have a cord insert. Its slit flange allows for easier tailoring, making it a practical option for automotive projects where precision is key.

Tinsel Welt
Tinsel Welt, a variation of embossed welt, adds a metallic flair with its clear vinyl and gold or silver insert. This decorative welt provides a sleek and stylish touch to automotive seats, delivering a vintage yet cool look that’s perfect for classic car interiors.

Choosing the Right Welt for Your Project

When deciding between welt cord fillers and premade welts, it’s important to weigh customization against convenience. With cord fillers like Poly, PVC, and Tissue Welt, you have the flexibility to create a truly personalized look by sewing your own fabric or vinyl over the cord, tailoring it to your specific design. This option is perfect for projects that require creative freedom and a custom finish. On the other hand, premade welts like Marine, Embossed, and Tinsel welts save time and effort, offering ready-to-use options that still deliver a professional, polished appearance. Whether you value customization or time efficiency, there's a welt option that will perfectly suit your project’s needs.
