Steve & Rhonda Meyer of Steve's Upholstery (Marlow, OK)
What does being an upholsterer mean to you?
It means we get to be creative and bring joy to our customers.
How did you get started in upholstery?
Steve took a class in high school and then taught me (Rhonda) after we got married.
What types of upholstery do you do?
A little bit of everything. We mainly do hospitals and casinos. A lot of boats and older vintage cars as well.
How long have you been upholstering?
Steve has been upholstering for 46 years and I have been upholstering for 42 years.
What is your biggest consumer demand?
Marine and Vintage Cars
What is your favorite upholstery project you've done?
We customized some party buses – that was cool. And a 1956 Nomad was an amazing car. We get trusted to recover heirloom furniture pieces also.
What is the strangest item you've found in a restoration?
We recovered a fleet of taxis years ago and found a lot of panties under back seats. We also found a shank in a prison mattress.
Have you noticed any up & coming trends?
Not really – our area is pretty old fashioned and enjoy restoring to original.
What changes would benefit the upholstery industry?
Would love to see it taught in VoTechs. We are a dying trade. Maybe that’s something for us to do in retirement!
Have you ever been featured on television, online, or in another Publication?
Not really.
Do you have a shop animal?
We had a beloved schnauzer named Hank who was with us for 21 years. He passed away in May but his presence is felt and missed every day.
Some answers have been edited for clarity.
