Carolyn Akins of Carolyn Akins Upholstery (Ripley, MS)
What does being an upholsterer mean to you?
It means everything to me. It is a great way to help save items from the landfill; I get to help my customers pick out the perfect materials and bring their ideas to life. It’s a hobby, something I enjoy doing, that also pays the bills!
How did you get started in upholstery?
I started out working in a furniture factory. While there, I started picking up pieces to redo and sell for extra money. Eventually a friend came to me who wanted car seats done, which led to me learning automotive and boat upholstery as well. I also had 4 children at the time I started and this career was a way to make money to help pay bills and to be a stay-at-home mom.
What types of upholstery do you do?
I do furniture, automotive, boats, four-wheelers - anything that has upholstery fabric. I am always up for a new challenge!
How long have you been upholstering?
I have been in the business for about 30 years.
What is your biggest consumer demand?
Half and half furniture and automotive.
What is your favorite upholstery project you've done?
Each project is my favorite because I get to see an old torn up piece become like new.
What is the strangest item you've found in a restoration?
I have found many odd things over the years but the strangest/coolest thing I found was old Army pictures and ration stamps.
Have you noticed any up & coming trends?
I think the trends change from month to month. Lately I have seen lots of diamond patterns and bold colors.
What changes would benefit the upholstery industry?
Teaching younger generations trade skills in school to help keep the upholstery business from becoming a dying trade.
Have you ever been featured on television, online, or in another Publication?
I was featured in our local newspaper and on local TV.
Do you have a shop animal?
Yes, a Shi Tzu named Ike!
